LEGACY Your Mark On The World

Legacy, we have all been put on planet earth for a reason. Why not leave it in a better place than you found it?

Having a purpose in life and aligning it to the work that you do is important if you wish to enjoy what
you do, be productive and perform at a high level. Some people have a desire to go beyond the world
they work in and leave a legacy for future generations to benefit from. CEO Legacy is all about finding
a greater purpose through a project or movement that creates a ripple effect across an area, industry
or the world.

A great example of this is Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is guided by the
belief that every life has equal value. They wish to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In
developing countries, it focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift
themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all
people—especially those with the fewest resources—have access to the opportunities they need to
succeed in school and life.

What mark do you want to leave on the world?

What is a person’s legacy?

  • part of a person that lives on long
  • story of a person so they are not forgotten.
  • path ways or the future
  • make better decisions in life.
  • transmitted, inherited or received from a predecessor.
  • creates meaning in our lives.

Everyone leaves behind a legacy after they die, but only few people leave behind a legacy worth talking about.

Examples of legacies that impacted humanity:

  • Martin Luther King jr. left behind his legacy of positive and selfless actions.
  • Adolf Hitler left behind a legacy of negativity, and destruction.
  • A grandmother’s legacy may be important her family
  • Actresses and actors legacies inspire people to do great things
  • Alexander the Great, whose conquering spirit changed the face of the ancient world
  • Marie Curie, multi-Nobel Prize winner and pioneering physicist
  • Nelson Mandela, an anti-apartheid revolutionary and South Africa’s first black president
  • Albert Einstein created the theory of relativity
  • Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun and founder of the Missionaries of Charity.
  • Oprah Winfrey pillar of kindness and has stood for truth, education, and giving back.

A legacy is

  • the story of some ones life,
  • the things they did,
  • places they went,
  • goals they accomplished,
  • their failures,
  • a path that guides people in decisions with what to do or what not to do

A lasting legacy is all about the actions you take during your life and the way those actions affect how people remember you.

Everyone has a choice between leaving a positive legacy or a negative one. Most people never consciously choose one or the other — it just happens. But the goal for you is to make a conscious decision about the legacy you’ll leave.

DESIGN A PATH TO YOUR LEGACY

  1. What intrinsically drives you?
  2. What matters to you the most?
  3. Who do you want to impact
  4. How can you achieve this through helping and serving others?

The legacy of successful leaders lives on through the people they touch along the way. The only things you can change permanently are the hearts of the people you lead.

Think how you can Make the World a Better Place, One Life At a Time

REWARD, Recognition & Reflection

Promote REWARD, recognition & reflection strategies to ensure accountability.

Company and team accountability means that all employees and team members are responsible for their actions, behaviours, performance and decisions.

When team members consistently demonstrate ownership and accountability, trust is formed.

“Instead of telling your team what to do (as in direction) tell them why it’s important (as in context.) Their ability to commit and be accountable for that task increases immensely as a result.” – Karthik Sridhar, Supply.ai

Quite often we reward the major achievements no matter how we got there. In a company or team we should always reward the collective desired behaviours. Reward us when we do what we are supposed to do!

As a leader, it is useful to ask the team how they would like to be rewarded. The worst decision you can make is offering them something they don’t collectively value.

If you want a team to stay at the top of its game, you need to recognize the team. Team recognition matters to both the team and each individual.

Reflecting on the performances, lessons and achievements is invaluable to a team and each individual. Find space for your people to have the time to reflect on what they have done.

active CEO Podcast 125 Craig Johns Create Direction & Meaning

Create Direction & Meaning

Why is it important to create DIRECTION & meaning through SHARED mission, vision, values & beliefs? Not setting direction can easily lead to conflict, apathy and poor productivity within your team or organisation.

To set a great direction, you must be able to set a course toward a destination that others will recognize as representing real progress for everyone involved.

Setting direction helps:

  1. Hold people accountable as the team has no doubt what they need to achieve.
  2. Clarify Priorities & reduces busy work, so people can start to focus their attention and effort towards achieving the direction.
  3. Motivate your team by giving them purpose and a “reason for being”.

Essential components that Create Direction includes:

  1. Being developed collaboratively.
  2. Brings them along the journey providing a clearly understood why and significance.
  3. Is specific, limits interpretation and everyone knows when you have arrived at the destination
  4. Is time-bound as deadlines equal pressure, which enable set priorities, managing workload and negotiate competing priorities
  5. Acknowledges uncertainty and remove the idea of perfection

MEANING – what is the significance of what we are collectively doing

SHARED MISSION – reason for pursuing the focus

SHARE VISION – your future focus of “our vision” or “the team’s vision.”

SHARED VALUES & BELIEFS – What you believe in and how you behave

PIONEER Life Is An Experiment

PIONEER Life Is An Experiment. Foster innovation and creativity through creating a learning environment where mistakes and failures are considered experiments and opportunities to grow and evolve.

Pioneer, is a person who is among the first to explore, settle a new country or area, or discover something new.

When you watch a child learning to crawl, taste something new, pull something over, or fall over when trying to stand up, they are experimenting. They quickly learn if something is not working, it is part of their social and emotional development.

It is no different for adults as our brain has neuroplasticity, which allows it to continue to grow and evolve when it is stimulated with new experiences. So why do we stop playing, innovating and creating? Is it because we are too afraid of what people will think if we make a mistake, be wrong or fail?

When we experiment we learn and it leads to better knowledge. Every person has to conduct their own experiments, so step out of your comfort zone and experiment a little.

Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better. What if they are a little coarse, and you may get your coat soiled or torn? What if you do fail, and get fairly rolled in the dirt once or twice. Up again, you shall never be so afraid of a tumble.” RALPH WALDO EMERSON

Thomas Edison is thought to have experimented over 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb.  The more experiments he made, the close he came to a solution.

Many of us spend our days as if we are going to live forever. We dream about things we never do. We think about things we never say. We sit and hope and expect things to fall into our lap but guess what? They never do.

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist.” OSCAR WILDE

Active CEO Performance Tip

People Want To Be Led – There has been an increase in focus on collaborative leadership in recent times. When COVID-19 took hold of the world, the most successful and effective leaders went into an authoritative leadership style. Why is this? The majority of people in the world seek to be led rather than lead when overwhelm and uncertainty consumed us. Human beings natural default is comfort and went on high alert for someone to assure them. The successful leaders during COVID-19 responded quickly, made a decision (rightly or wrongly) and provided a clear direction, which gave people hope, a level of certainty and they knew someone cared. The reason the leaders could thrive in an Authoritative Leadership mode was because they had already build up a certain level of trust and loyalty with their people, which is likely to have included aspects of collaborative leadership.

PEOPLE Serve People Who Matter

Employees are the heartbeat of a company. What happens if the heart stops beating? It is important to note that people can be your greatest assets, but they can also be your greatest liabilities!

People don’t leave companies, they leave managers! Employees who have been pushed to the point that they no longer care, will not go the extra mile.

People are our greatest assets so it is important that you serve those who matter, through a coaching leadership approach where you create a growth and learning environment.

Are you being a servant leader who has a coaching leadership approach?

  1. Recruitment and Selection
  2. Targeted Training
  3. Knowledge Sharing

Leadership Talent Cycle

  1. Talent Identification – through effective recruitment practices
  2. Talent Development – through a coach leadership approach
  3. Talent Performance – through removing barriers and getting out of the way

Leadership Growth Triad

  1. 3x Talent Cycle
  2. Recruit Employees who have talent
  3. Recruit Mentors who train employees
  4. Recruit Coaches who inspire mentors

“Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to.” RICHARD BRANSON

There is nothing more beautiful than teaching, coaching and mentoring people. The immense pride and enjoyment you get out of seeing someone grow is supported by the benefits you receive by teaching and coaching. You learn more about yourself, you tend to reflect on your own habits and routines, and you provide an opportunity to learn new ways of doing things.

“People learn the most when teaching others.” PETER DRUCKER

As a CEO or leader you have a huge responsibility to not only prepare your people for their work, but also prepare them for life. More than just teaching skills, you have an obligation to teach them to find and understand their purpose.

Once people understand their purpose, you then have to work with them to connect it with the purpose of the company and the work they are completing. People are the only sustainable thing in an organization or a team.

There is nothing more rewarding than teaching people to become better than ourselves. Many CEO’s and leaders are afraid of the people they work with becoming better skilled, better leaders and better people than they are. It’s all about ego, and they need to realize that way of thinking is hindering the progress of both the company and themselves. As a CEO and leader, you need to learn how to create a mindset where you are proud of people growing above you, rather than being afraid of it.

“Give a man a fish; feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish; feed him for a lifetime.” LAO TZU

How are you leading your people?

Your people are your greatest asset. Take the time to communicate with your people, listen to them, and ask questions that improve their understanding, and bring them closer to the purpose of the company and what they want to achieve in life. Find ways to reflect on how you interact with your people and seek new ways to communicate more effectively. You have a great responsibility!

“If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; If in terms of ten years, plant trees; If in terms of 100 years, teach the people.” CONFUSCIOUS

Active CEO Performance Tip

Focus On CERTAINTY Not Uncertainty During Major Change – Are you still finding yourself attracted to the uncertainty of 2020? It is important that you take control and focus on controlling the controllable’s. Here are 4 ways to ensure you take control of the certainties in your life: 1.) Write down two lists. One with all the things you can control and the second all those you cant. 2.) Place the list of uncontrollable’s in the bin. 3.) Write down one action you can do for each controllable. 4.) Rank the controllable’s in order of highest impact with the least amount of effort.

Active CEO Performance Tip

Create A Ripple Effect With PURPOSE – Have you become too focused on yourself and you don’t feel fulfilled. Focus on something bigger than just yourself. Determine what your companies or your own real purpose is in life. Your why or your companies why? What work can you do to serve that purpose and leave a positive mark or dent on the world? 3 questions to ask yourself – 1. What makes you come alive? 2. What are your innate strengths? 3. Where do you add greatest value? NOW IF YOU ARE STILL STRUGGLING TO IDENTIFY YOUR WHY here are 3 more questions to ask yourself: 1. What do people come to ask for help on and thank you for? 2. What would do you love doing that you would do everyday without a paycheck? 3. If you found out that you only had one year left, what would you imagine yourself doing? Its time for you to do some self reflection and find clarity on your why!
