TRUST Through Healthy Confrontation

As leaders it is important that we build TRUST & resilience through healthy confrontation in a safe psychological space.

Trust and resilience are two important ingredients when it comes to positive and successful team dynamics. Trust is the glue and resilience is the pliability of the collective.

Trust is confidence in the honesty or integrity of a person or thing, and/or having confidence, faith or hope in someone or something.

Resilience is our ability to adapt well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress—such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems, or workplace and financial stressors.

To build trust and resilience we need to create an environment that fosters healthy confrontation where people or groups with opposing ideas or opinions are free to express without the fear of retaliation or negative consequences. This is achieved through creating a safe psychological safety where the shared belief in the team is that it is safe for interpersonal risk taking, and team members feel accepted and respected.

in 2018 Google released their research findings on the five keys to a successful Google team. They found that the highest-performing teams have one thing in common: psychological safety, the belief that you won’t be punished when you make a mistake.

To achieve psychological safety, we need to create a space that allows for moderate risk-taking, speaking your mind, creativity, and sticking your neck out without fear of having it cut off. The results are higher levels of engagement, increased motivation, effective problem solving, enhanced learning and better performance.

Healthy confrontation done effectively is a true asset to your business or team. To create an atmosphere of healthy confrontation build rapport, be timely with confronting, focus on the issue rather than the person, aim to find a resolution and always follow up after the conversation.

It’s time for your to build the trust and resilience need in your workplace to stimulate innovation and creativity.

active CEO Podcast #135 REWARD Recognition & Reflection

active CEO Podcast 135 Reward, Recognition and Reflection

REWARD, Recognition & Reflection

Promote REWARD, recognition & reflection strategies to ensure accountability.

Company and team accountability means that all employees and team members are responsible for their actions, behaviours, performance and decisions.

When team members consistently demonstrate ownership and accountability, trust is formed.

“Instead of telling your team what to do (as in direction) tell them why it’s important (as in context.) Their ability to commit and be accountable for that task increases immensely as a result.” – Karthik Sridhar, Supply.ai

Quite often we reward the major achievements no matter how we got there. In a company or team we should always reward the collective desired behaviours. Reward us when we do what we are supposed to do!

As a leader, it is useful to ask the team how they would like to be rewarded. The worst decision you can make is offering them something they don’t collectively value.

If you want a team to stay at the top of its game, you need to recognize the team. Team recognition matters to both the team and each individual.

Reflecting on the performances, lessons and achievements is invaluable to a team and each individual. Find space for your people to have the time to reflect on what they have done.

Growth Through Creative Risk-taking

How to foster GROWTH through creative risk-taking, problem-solving & information sharing.

Albert Einstein once noted that ‘creativity is intelligence having fun’. He was discussing the connecting between the science and the art in society through experiments, creations, innovative thinking and different perceptions of the world.

Creativity involves bringing something new or innovative, whether it be an action, product, idea, approach or representation.

It is how we interpret or translate what we see, believe or create for the world.

How can you create a culture of creativity and innovation in your team or organisation?

What ways can you ensure the focus on creativity and innovation is throughout the entire team or organisation?

How are you living the leadership behaviours of creativity and innovation?

What can you implement to ensure that innovation is reinforced through providing the time to innovate, values, recognition and rewards?

It is valuable to ensure that barriers are removed, but just enough controls in place to ensure that intelligent risk-taking takes place?

It is time for you to reward and foster a culture of creativity and risk-taking.

Influence Collaborative Leadership

How to provide a collaborative LEADERSHIP style through consistent influence & direction.

What is collaborative leadership? It is all about how people interact across functional and organizational boundaries.

It requires cognitive diversity as collaborative leadership will not be successful if you are collaborating with a team of individuals that think the same, have similar backgrounds and experience, or even occupy the same hierarchical positions.

Collaborative leadership is a powerful way to inspire creativity and innovation, which requires divergent thinking and conversations.

Trust, reliability, integrity and honesty is so important for collaborative teams as it isn’t just about people working together.

It is important to create a psychological safe space were people feel secure, valued and trusted.

As a leader your role is a connector who has the ability to link people, divergent ideas and resources that wouldn’t normally converge with one another. Connectors are critical to collaboration.

To be a collaborative leader, there are 7 qualities to be prepared for:

  1. take risks
  2. be an active listener
  3. show passion for what you do
  4. have an optimistic mindset
  5. simplify for your people
  6. actively manage tension and strong personalities
  7. have the confidence to share credit
