active CEO Podcast #129 Establish Diverse Professional Relationships

active CEO Podcast 129 Craig Johns Establish Diverse Professional Relationships

Establish diverse professional RELATIONSHIPS that are supportive, enjoyable & dependable.

Diversity in leadership and teams is most spoken about as of gender or race. I believe that the some of the most profound diversity we experience in life is related to the diversity of thought. This allows the greatest opportunity for innovation and high performing teams to occur.

Establish diverse professional relationships is all about creating an environment that encourages diversity of thought, diversity of perspective, diversity of opinion.

To create a diversity of thought you need to surround yourself with people who have diverse experiences. Differences in learning styles, industries, race, gender, socioeconomic backgrounds and influences. None of the differences are more potent than the other. It is the collective diversity that matters.

By bringing together people who come from different perspectives at the table, the solutions that we bring to our clients, the way we interact, and the relationships we build with our clients and ourselves are going to distinguish ourselves from our competitors.

It is important that you create an environment were people maintain their individuality, rather than groupthink, which can occur when we surround ourselves with like minded people. You want people who look through different lenses, listen through different ears and speak with different voices.

3 Areas of diversity that provide greater organizational performance:

  1. Intentional recruitment of diverse employees;
  2. Develop diverse integrative programs rather than diversity programs; and
  3. Create an environment where diversity of thought, perspective and opinion is rewarded.

Role Clarity For Culture

As a leader it is important to develop clear ROLES & responsibilities to build team culture. From the top down, right through the company or team, it is important that not only each person has clarity on their role, but also every other person.

Culture is the behaviours, attitudes, values and beliefs shared by a team. It is how people work together towards a common goal and how they treat each other.

The culture starts at the top and to ensure it can foster and develop effectively, each person needs to clearly know their and their other team members roles and responsibilities. If people know what they are accountable for then it is easier to foster a collaborative team culture.

Does your team have role clarity for culture?

active CEO Podcast #125 Creat Direction And Meaning

active CEO Podcast 125 Craig Johns Create Direction & Meaning

Create Direction & Meaning

Why is it important to create DIRECTION & meaning through SHARED mission, vision, values & beliefs? Not setting direction can easily lead to conflict, apathy and poor productivity within your team or organisation.

To set a great direction, you must be able to set a course toward a destination that others will recognize as representing real progress for everyone involved.

Setting direction helps:

  1. Hold people accountable as the team has no doubt what they need to achieve.
  2. Clarify Priorities & reduces busy work, so people can start to focus their attention and effort towards achieving the direction.
  3. Motivate your team by giving them purpose and a “reason for being”.

Essential components that Create Direction includes:

  1. Being developed collaboratively.
  2. Brings them along the journey providing a clearly understood why and significance.
  3. Is specific, limits interpretation and everyone knows when you have arrived at the destination
  4. Is time-bound as deadlines equal pressure, which enable set priorities, managing workload and negotiate competing priorities
  5. Acknowledges uncertainty and remove the idea of perfection

MEANING – what is the significance of what we are collectively doing

SHARED MISSION – reason for pursuing the focus

SHARE VISION – your future focus of “our vision” or “the team’s vision.”

SHARED VALUES & BELIEFS – What you believe in and how you behave

active CEO Podcast Craig Johns NRG2Perform High Performance Leadership PIONEER Life Is An Experiment

PIONEER Life Is An Experiment

PIONEER Life Is An Experiment. Foster innovation and creativity through creating a learning environment where mistakes and failures are considered experiments and opportunities to grow and evolve.

Pioneer, is a person who is among the first to explore, settle a new country or area, or discover something new.

When you watch a child learning to crawl, taste something new, pull something over, or fall over when trying to stand up, they are experimenting. They quickly learn if something is not working, it is part of their social and emotional development.

It is no different for adults as our brain has neuroplasticity, which allows it to continue to grow and evolve when it is stimulated with new experiences. So why do we stop playing, innovating and creating? Is it because we are too afraid of what people will think if we make a mistake, be wrong or fail?

When we experiment we learn and it leads to better knowledge. Every person has to conduct their own experiments, so step out of your comfort zone and experiment a little.

Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better. What if they are a little coarse, and you may get your coat soiled or torn? What if you do fail, and get fairly rolled in the dirt once or twice. Up again, you shall never be so afraid of a tumble.” RALPH WALDO EMERSON

Thomas Edison is thought to have experimented over 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb.  The more experiments he made, the close he came to a solution.

Many of us spend our days as if we are going to live forever. We dream about things we never do. We think about things we never say. We sit and hope and expect things to fall into our lap but guess what? They never do.

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist.” OSCAR WILDE
