Active CEO Performance Tip

“With great power comes great responsibility” – As Spiderman once said, while sharing his wisdom. As a leader you not only have a responsibility for yourself, your family and your people, but also for the industry you work in and humankind. We are not leaders if we shy away from inappropriate behaviour and negative decisions. We have a responsibility to ensure that the industry we work in grows in a positive manner as the actions of the negative few can have a harmful effect on everyone. Ask yourself the question, is these actions and behaviour moving the industry forward or taking it backwards? What is the consequence to human beings as a result of these actions and behaviours? How responsible are you as a leader?

active CEO Podcast #115 PERFORMANCE Productivity Starts With Happiness

active CEO Podcast Craig Johns NRG2Perform High Performance Leadership PERFORMANCE Productivity Starts With Happiness

PERFORMANCE Productivity Starts With Happiness

Productivity is not what you produce. Productivity is what you accomplish!

Performance is the state or quality of being productive. It is a state of mind that you consciously choose. The state or quality of being productive is the completion of a task with application of knowledge, skills and abilities. In a workplace it refers to how employees behave and how well they perform their roles and responsibilities. For an employee, performance may refer to work effectiveness, quality and efficiency at the task level.

Charles Duhigg defines productivity as “making certain choices in certain ways” that moves us from being “merely busy” to “genuinely productive”

People have 100% control over personal productivity, our individual output over certain period of time.

We often make the mistake of equating just being busy with being productive, but they aren’t the same thing. We all have 24hrs in a day. It is about how can you make the most of of your hours and create lasting habits of achievement and fulfillment instead of chasing endless lists of tasks. In other words, work smarter, not harder

HAPPINESS

Happiness is those things that make life worth living. It is the greatest recruitment and retention tools in the world. Productivity and performance increases when people feel happy and enjoy what they do. As Sydney J. Harris mentioned, “Happiness is a direction, not a place“.

Have a workplace that encourages happiness is where employees differences are nurtured, there is transparency, value is added to employees rather than taking it away, there is shared meaning and purpose, and it is intrinsically rewarding. Your culture is your brand!

People want to do great work, that matters, make a differences, and magnifies their strengths, not their weaknesses. They want to find meaning in their work. This has been shown to increase motivation, engagement, empowerment, career development, job satisfaction, individual performance and personal fulfillment, and decreases absenteeism and stress.

Leaders can provide an environment where there is work-life flexibility, balance, positive reinforcement, reduced micro-management, employee personal and professional investment, small wins are celebrated with fun and has perks that aren’t payrises.

Where is your ATTENTION and what is your INTENTION?

Active CEO Performance Tip

People Want To Be Led – There has been an increase in focus on collaborative leadership in recent times. When COVID-19 took hold of the world, the most successful and effective leaders went into an authoritative leadership style. Why is this? The majority of people in the world seek to be led rather than lead when overwhelm and uncertainty consumed us. Human beings natural default is comfort and went on high alert for someone to assure them. The successful leaders during COVID-19 responded quickly, made a decision (rightly or wrongly) and provided a clear direction, which gave people hope, a level of certainty and they knew someone cared. The reason the leaders could thrive in an Authoritative Leadership mode was because they had already build up a certain level of trust and loyalty with their people, which is likely to have included aspects of collaborative leadership.

PEOPLE Serve People Who Matter

Employees are the heartbeat of a company. What happens if the heart stops beating? It is important to note that people can be your greatest assets, but they can also be your greatest liabilities!

People don’t leave companies, they leave managers! Employees who have been pushed to the point that they no longer care, will not go the extra mile.

People are our greatest assets so it is important that you serve those who matter, through a coaching leadership approach where you create a growth and learning environment.

Are you being a servant leader who has a coaching leadership approach?

  1. Recruitment and Selection
  2. Targeted Training
  3. Knowledge Sharing

Leadership Talent Cycle

  1. Talent Identification – through effective recruitment practices
  2. Talent Development – through a coach leadership approach
  3. Talent Performance – through removing barriers and getting out of the way

Leadership Growth Triad

  1. 3x Talent Cycle
  2. Recruit Employees who have talent
  3. Recruit Mentors who train employees
  4. Recruit Coaches who inspire mentors

“Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to.” RICHARD BRANSON

There is nothing more beautiful than teaching, coaching and mentoring people. The immense pride and enjoyment you get out of seeing someone grow is supported by the benefits you receive by teaching and coaching. You learn more about yourself, you tend to reflect on your own habits and routines, and you provide an opportunity to learn new ways of doing things.

“People learn the most when teaching others.” PETER DRUCKER

As a CEO or leader you have a huge responsibility to not only prepare your people for their work, but also prepare them for life. More than just teaching skills, you have an obligation to teach them to find and understand their purpose.

Once people understand their purpose, you then have to work with them to connect it with the purpose of the company and the work they are completing. People are the only sustainable thing in an organization or a team.

There is nothing more rewarding than teaching people to become better than ourselves. Many CEO’s and leaders are afraid of the people they work with becoming better skilled, better leaders and better people than they are. It’s all about ego, and they need to realize that way of thinking is hindering the progress of both the company and themselves. As a CEO and leader, you need to learn how to create a mindset where you are proud of people growing above you, rather than being afraid of it.

“Give a man a fish; feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish; feed him for a lifetime.” LAO TZU

How are you leading your people?

Your people are your greatest asset. Take the time to communicate with your people, listen to them, and ask questions that improve their understanding, and bring them closer to the purpose of the company and what they want to achieve in life. Find ways to reflect on how you interact with your people and seek new ways to communicate more effectively. You have a great responsibility!

“If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; If in terms of ten years, plant trees; If in terms of 100 years, teach the people.” CONFUSCIOUS

PURPOSE Create A Ripple Effect

Craig Johns talks about PURPOSE, create a ripple effect and the importance of knowing your WHY, VISION, MISSION and VALUES.

Have you ever wondered what the most successful people in the world have in common? They have absolute clarity on their vision!

It is very difficult to find your destination, when you don’t know what it is. To be able to gain clarity on your vision, you first need to understand your purpose in life.

Why do you get up each day with a  spring in your stride, what fuels your fire, what brings a smile to your face?

Today we are going to explore why you need to understand your purpose so you can be a world class leader who is creating a ripple effect.

Why – Vision – Mission – Values

Let’s start with your Why, your Purpose in life

What is your reason for existence as a human being? What is your intention and objective that you want to achieve in life? Why have you been put on this planet?

How can you create a ripple effect through your employees, team members and people of influence?

Focus on something bigger than just yourself. Determine what your companies or your own real purpose is in life. Your why or your companies why?

What work can you do to serve that purpose and leave a positive mark or dent on the world? The WHY is the purpose, cause or belief that drives every one of us.

Vision

What is your destination? What does the future look like? What does success look like in 5, 10, 20, 30 or 100 years time?

Does your vision inspire you, challenge you and make you feel a little bit or a whole lot uncomfortable? (for the right reasons?)

My vision:

“DEVELOP HIGH PERFORMING LEADERS WHO POSITIVELY IMPACT PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD”

Mission

What is the reason and path you will take to get to your vision? What is your intention and how you will do it?

The mission must be simple and easy for people to understand the path that you will take and why you will take it to achieve the vision.

My mission:

“TRANSFORMING INFLUENCERS INTO BEING HIGH PERFORMING LEADERS”

Values

What is your DNA? What are the core values that you will base decisions and beliefs on?

What will you be consistent with so your are congruent with your message and who your are?

My values:

Craig Johns values NRG2Perform DNA
