Dr. Jane Foster – Emotional Resilience

Dr. Jane Foster is the founder of Emotional Resilience, a dedicated researcher, and the author behind the recent publication, “It’s In Your Hands”. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Teaching, a Masters Degree in Education & Learning Management from Central Queensland University, and a Ph.D. in Health Promotion and Education from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Drawing from over four decades of global teaching experience, she intertwines her expertise in Chinese Medicine, Shiatsu, and yoga to empower individuals in taking charge of their emotional journey, helping them navigate through life’s challenges with grace. Her mission is to revolutionise our societal mindset, steering away from blame, criticism, and judgment towards fostering psychological well-being, life satisfaction, and resilience.

“That’s why it’s called selective vulnerability. It’s actually a thing that is a balance between oversharing and undersharing. Vulnerable Open Honest COMMUNICATION

As leaders it is important that we create a safe psychological space for vulnerability & open honest communication.

Great leaders create a space for effective communication, whereas poor leaders allow poor communication to occur by itself.

Communication should always be a dialogue, not a monologue, and therefore ensure everyone has a voice at the table, is heard and respected.

To ensure people have trust to be vulnerable enough to display open and honest communication, they first need a safe psychological space. Remember, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Richard Branson describes communication as the most important skill a leader can possess”.

SAFE PSYCHOLOGICAL SPACE

Psychological safety is a belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns or mistakes.” … A solid team should be able to bounce ideas off each other, strengthen action plans, help solve issues and provide support to each other.

Psychologically safe team members “feel confident that no one on the team will embarrass or punish anyone else for admitting a mistake, asking a question, or offering a new idea.” 

Psychological safety is as important to team or company success as employee experience and workplace culture.

Simon Sinek notes in the Circle of Safety “leadership reduces the threats people feel inside the group, which frees them up to focus more time and energy to protect the organization from the constant dangers outside and seize the big opportunities.”

VULNERABILITY

Vulnerability has traditionally been viewed as a weakness in the workplace, and the thought of being exposed — flaws, imperfections, challenges, and all— is, for most people, completely terrifying.

But the conversation about vulnerability in our culture is starting to change. And as it turns out, being vulnerable at work isn’t a liability — it’s an asset.

Dr. Brené Brown defines vulnerability as “uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure.” She also notes that “Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable.”

OPEN HONEST COMMUNICATION

Being clear, open and honest gives the impression of authenticity and integrity, essential foundations for true collaboration.

Open and honest communication leads more quickly to a mutual understanding and respect for a difference in views, interests and needs.

Own Your OWN Vulnerability – Have the courage to be uncomfortable for growth. A comfort zone is a wonderful place, but nothing ever grows there.

Successful people have the unique ability to perform under high levels of pressure. Pressure comes from internal and external expectations, and as the stakes rise, fear grows. Being able to deal with fear and the uncomfortable feelings that are associated, you have to be better prepared to control your state of mind.

Why do we feel uncomfortable? That uncomfortable feeling comes from going into a place where you have never been before. You are making a change and disrupting the way your mind and body are used to doing something. It might be doing something for the first time or doing something you haven’t done for a while. It could be doing something you are used to, but the conditions or parameters have changed.

“If you want something in life that you have never had, you will have to do something that you have never done.

To have the courage change, you also must have a sense of vulnerability. On the other side of the coin you must also have courage to be vulnerable. It is important that you have a strong sense of purpose and be prepared for being uncomfortable.

This episode will also look at being prepared to push the boundaries, surround yourself with a supportive team, understand how you manage being uncomfortable, developing and uncomfortable mindset and what rituals and behaviors can you create, so that each day you feel more comfortable with the uncomfortable.
